Top Sci-fi Movie
by Ian on April 2, 2007
Ok, I’ll take the bait. BBC reported that readers of SFX magazine had voted Serenity as best sci-fi movie. Eh? Bloody fanboy’s. It’s good but not that good. So if it was me choosing the top ten it would be, in particular order…
- Blade Runner
- The Empire Strikes Back
- The Matrix
- Star Wars
- Terminator
- Aliens
- 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Serenity
- Back to the Future
- Starship Troopers
Anyone like to add one I’ve missed or should have considered?

Star Wars > Empire
Alien > Aliens
Brazil > most of them
I also don’t see Judge Dredd or Doom on that list though?!

How could I forget Galaxy Quest!

I prefer Empire, Aliens/Alien is a close one, didn’t like Brazil. Judge Dredd and Doom sucked ass. Galaxy Quest was funny though.
I’m now thinking Gattaca should have made my list. Hey ho.

I’ll put a shout in for “Forbidden Planet” – its just the 51 years old and packed full of great sci-fi elements, monsters from the id, neon laser effects and a robot that made booze!
I know it got panned at the time but I also enjoyed the remake of “War of the Worlds”. That noise the machines made before they attacked rocked my world. Oh yeah.
Finally, I can’t forget watching “The Thing” late one night with my Dad when I was a wee kid. The effects were again awsome for its day, but it also had the deeper psychological element – and great music too. Message to John Carpenter – you haven’t made a decent movie in 25 years – pull your finger out you lazy b*stard!!!!

I almost added War of the Worlds as I enjoyed it too. I don’t know why…I hated Forbidden Planet.
